Telling the truth is one of the hardest concepts to swallow for anyone. In society, the majority are taught we have to be at a certain level to be of any value. Or even worse, we get to the point of just plain not caring and accepting what, again, society deems as great. Think about it, over the last couple of years; we have adopted the concept of the dad bod. Even young men age 18 and up have taken on this new identity of having the dad bod. I'm not knocking it at all; to each is their own, but I will knock when you are lying to yourself and continuing unhealthy practices. Hell, you can be big and fit and healthy. There are plenty of body types that are like that. Some people can work out so religiously that they never see results. That is a beautiful thing, and those people have what most don't, which is grit.
I am not writing this blog to bash how you look. I am writing this blog because I was one of those people before lying to myself and letting society tell me that being 300lbs was sexy. As an African American male with a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, and all types of diseases, I was a damn fool. That is why I am writing you this blog now because I want you to be so much better and not repeat unnecessary mistakes. If you are still looking for the term to use, it's called self-awareness. Not the cookie-cutter mystic version, but the one that is going to set you free. Below you are going to read the top lies that we tell ourselves. Then after you read this article, you will take action and get back on track towards your best.
We are Scared of the Truth
Yes, you are fearful. You are afraid of what can be or what you can become. I will use this example because it hits home with so many people. We all know what it takes to get in shape. You eat proper exercise, and boom, you got the golden ticket after some time. If you are reading this, you know that everything takes work and nothing is overnight ever. So instead of facing your truth, you come up with excuses, and you don't want to take a moment to slow down and face yourself. I am here to tell you to get over yourself. Like everyone else in the world, we all are full of it until we sip some of the truth serum and face ourselves.
People's Average Opinions Are Your Reality
I got to go back to this point here. We are so engrossed in everyone else's lives these days it's not funny. If I asked you about a celebrity, you would probably know everything about them. But if I asked you the simple question of who you are, you would give me something along the lines of what you do. Then to add to that, the voices that aren't pushing you but reaffirming your mediocrity are the ones that you listen to most. Would you mind experimenting to confirm this? I was hoping you could post a picture of yourself and see how much clout you will get. Then I want you to post about some endeavor that you are working on that will better you to an entirely new level and watch that clout drop. It is sad, but that is where building self-awareness will enhance you to greater heights. Instead of listening to the average, you look inward and listen to the actual source, which will set you free.
Take-Away
This year is almost done. Soon we will be starting a brand new year, and you will either be growing or just existing. Building self-awareness will cause you not to like yourself or your actions in the past or present. That is perfectly fine as long as you're taking some steps towards yourself. You need to drown out the voices and start listening to yourself. When you figure out who you are and what is and isn't, you will transform into your best self.
